About Raka
Meet Raka. Please read his story before applying to adopt.
Raka was born in a community outside of Newman where he would roam around playing happily with the other local dogs. Unfortunately an incident took place that still remains a mystery. Raka went missing for a few days, and when found, he was paralysed from the waist down.
With many visits to the Newman vet, blood tests and scans -no one was really quite sure what had happened. He didn’t look to have damage from a car or accident and there was no evidence of poisoning.
Raka came to Newman SAFE where he would board at the Newman Vet while the nurses would care for him until we worked out what we would do.
Miraculously, over the weeks, Raka managed to gain strength in his legs. He began dragging himself around to standing and hobbling around, to now where he can run and play like a normal dog again.
Raka can be quite fearful of meeting new people and will usually give people a sniff and then want to be ignored. Physical touching or eye contact this can be too much for him and cause a fear reaction. For this reason he would need an adoptive parent who gives him time and space to develop trust and he would not suit a home with a lot of visitors frequenting the house.
He loves his little foster dog brother though but can be reactive to other dogs (mostly large and boisterous ones). Raka would not be suitable to live with children or cats.
Despite what he has been through Raka is still a very loveable boy. He has put all his trust in his foster family and is a quiet, sweet and easy dog to have around the home.
He spends hours snoozing in the sun and loves to go exploring during on leash walks. Despite his social anxiety, Raka has attended obedience competitions and earned a perfect score at his first competition.
With time his trainable nature may help him to overcome his fear related behaviour when in a stable, supportive home using positive reinforcement methods.
After all this boy has been through, we would love nothing more than to see him go to a quiet home where he can live out his life. Could this be with you?
